Planning for the Unexpected: Why Lasting Powers of Attorney Matter

3 minute read by Jamie Shepherd on 12th Jun 2026

Many people focus their planning on what happens when they die, ensuring they have a Will in place and that their loved ones are looked after. However, planning for what happens if you are unable to make decisions for yourself during your lifetime is just as important.

One client's experience demonstrates why.

At the age of 20, following the loss of their mother, the client inherited a small property. During this time, a trusted Financial Adviser encouraged them to take out a modest Critical Illness Insurance policy. Although the monthly premium felt like a significant expense at the time, they agreed to put the cover in place.

Several years later, the client suffered a serious stroke. While recovering from a brain injury and unable to work, the Critical Illness policy paid out £70,000, allowing them to reduce their mortgage substantially at a time when financial security was needed most.

Looking back, the client describes that decision as one of the most valuable financial choices they ever made. What initially seemed like an unnecessary expense became a lifeline when circumstances changed unexpectedly.

Their experience also highlights another important consideration: what happens if you survive a serious illness or injury but lose the ability to manage your finances or make healthcare decisions?

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to choose trusted individuals to make decisions on your behalf should you become unable to do so yourself. Without an LPA in place, loved ones may face lengthy delays, additional costs, and legal complications when trying to help manage your affairs.

The client reflects that many people plan for death but give little thought to the possibility of becoming incapacitated during their lifetime. Yet serious illness, accidents, and unexpected health conditions can affect people of any age.

By putting an LPA in place, you retain control over who would manage your financial affairs and make decisions about your health and welfare if the need ever arose. It provides reassurance that your wishes can be followed and that those closest to you have the legal authority to act when it matters most.

This Planning Story serves as a reminder that effective planning is not only about protecting your loved ones after you're gone. It is also about safeguarding your wellbeing, finances, and decision-making during your lifetime should the unexpected happen.
