A successful business owner in his early 60s approached Soteria Estate Planning after a conversation with his accountant raised an important question: "What happens to the business if something happens to you?"
Having spent more than 25 years building a profitable company, he had always focused on growth, clients, and day-to-day operations. While he had considered retirement at some point in the future, he had never formally planned how he would exit the business or what would happen if he became unable to work unexpectedly.
During our discussions, we explored the different ways every business owner ultimately leaves their business. Whether through a sale, retirement, business closure, incapacity, or death, an exit will eventually occur. The client quickly recognised that while he had invested significant time and effort building the company, he had no formal arrangements in place to protect either the business or his family should the unexpected happen.
One of his main concerns was ensuring that his wife and children would not be left dealing with uncertainty if he became seriously ill or lost mental capacity. As the key decision-maker within the business, many important relationships, financial arrangements, and operational responsibilities relied heavily on him.
We worked closely with the client to review his personal estate planning arrangements and identify areas that required attention. This included updating his Will and putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place to ensure trusted individuals could make financial and business-related decisions on his behalf if he were unable to do so himself.
By taking proactive steps, the client was able to gain clarity about his future plans and ensure that both his family and business were better protected. Rather than leaving important decisions to chance, he now has a framework in place that provides certainty and reassurance, regardless of what the future may bring.
This planning story highlights an important reality for business owners: every business has an exit strategy, whether it's planned or not. Taking the time to put the right legal arrangements in place can help protect your business, your family, and the legacy you have worked so hard to build.
