Supporting Brightest Stars: Why This Charity Means So Much to Me

For the past two years, I have had the privilege of supporting Brightest Stars, a local charity that provides bereavement support to children and their families across Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire following the loss of a parent.

Brightest Stars was founded by Helen Rowell following the sudden loss of her husband, Mike. The charity ensures that children and families facing bereavement have access to the support they need during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Through counselling, play therapy, family support groups, days out and a supportive WhatsApp group, Brightest Stars creates a safe and understanding environment where families can connect, heal and realise they are not alone.

I have a role within the charity as their photographer and videographer, as well as being on hand as a member of the team to chat to the families who under the saddest of circumstances have found Brightest Stars. Whilst there are many people involved in delivering the incredible support Brightest Stars provides, I feel incredibly fortunate that my skills allow me to contribute in a small, but meaningful way.

Over the past two years, I have photographed family events, fundraising activities and special moments that help tell the story of the charity and the families it supports. Through video and photography, I am able to capture memories, celebrate achievements and help raise awareness of the charity's work throughout the local community.

What I enjoy most, however, is not the camera itself.

It is getting to know the families, spending time with the children and seeing first-hand the positive impact Brightest Stars has on people's lives. Every event is a reminder of the resilience of the families involved and the importance of creating opportunities for them to connect, smile and make new memories together.

Photography and videography is a small contribution compared to the counselling, support services and events that Brightest Stars provides. However, I have come to realise that every photograph and social media post helps raise awareness help to showcase the incredible difference the charity makes. If this helps one more family discover the support available to them, or encourages one more person to donate, volunteer or fundraise, then it has played a small part in helping the charity continue its mission.
